Agordo and surroundings, an experience in the Dolomites

Agordo rises in a basin at the foot of the Dolomites. It is perhaps the most important town in the area that gives it its name, the Agordino. The main city buildings overlook the main square of Agordo (Piazza della Libertà), first of all the archdiaconal abbey church of Santa Maria Nascente, a neo-Renaissance style building recognizable by the two white domed bells. Worthy of mention is the Crotta-De 'Manzoni palace, formerly owned by the owners of the mines, now a wonderful example of a large Venetian villa. Half of this mansion is for private use, while the old stables area houses the collection of the Optical and Eyewear Museum. Piazza della Libertà is delighted by a huge green expanse, the “Broi”, which often hosts the most important events taking place in the city. From this location you can admire in every direction the green of the alpine valleys and the sharp profile of the Dolomites. It is obvious to suggest one of the many trekking routes that from the village lead either to the refuges or towards one of the mountain sides, such as the itinerary that from the Duran Pass leads to the Carestiato Refuge, under the top of the Moiazza. The local economy was closely linked to the copper mine located in the Imperina Valley, in the current town of Rivamonte Agordino; the center can be visited and tells the story of one of the most important mining centers in the history of Veneto. Today as in the past, anyone passing through Agordo should taste the flagship of local production, that is the cheeses (cow and goat), produced at zero kilometer by the local cooperative.
