Journey to the most authentic Calabria: Fiumara, between the Aspromonte and the sea

Between the Tyrrhenian and Aspromonte lies the ancient village of Fiumara, whose center is divided into five historic hamlets. Our journey starts from Borgo Terra, the oldest of the quintet. It can be considered the historic center of the town, where the most ancient and authentic testimonies of a by now distant time are preserved, such as the church of the Immaculate Conception, inside which an important painting dedicated to the Virgin Mary is kept. by Antonello da Messina, or as Palazzo Catalano and the ruins of the Castle of the Ruffo di Calabria. Each fraction of Fiumara has a church, so, moving towards the Tre Rupi district, we find that of San Rocco, today a parish church, that of the Madonna del Carmine, the heart of the San Nicola district, rebuilt following a devastating earthquake, the church of Jesus child in the Croce district, located next to the remains of the ancient Dominican convent, concluding, finally, the path with the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo apostoli in the San Pietro district, also raised following the destructive seismic event of 1908. In a territory so steeped in sacredness, events linked to religion cannot be missing, among which the setting up of the living present that involves almost half of the population, and the various patronal festivals, each of which turns into an opportunity to experience the territory and its rich traditions. In this land, made of sea and mountains together, gastronomic excellences such as canestrato cheese, born from the love for pastoralism and agriculture and made by a local historical company, cannot be missing. Those who visit Fiumara have the opportunity to enjoy a generous nature, just like the land of Calabria which, beyond any prejudice, is able to offer us places of authentic and boundless beauty.
