Discovering Trieste and its surroundings: a visit to Muggia and the spectacular Miramare castle

The trip to the city of Trieste continues in the oldest historic café, the Tommaseo café, dating back to 1830, which has always been a meeting point for artists, writers and patriots of the time. A few steps from the city center you arrive towards Porto Vecchio, a ghost town. A series of buildings that represent one of the greatest expressions of industrial architecture in Europe, built in the second half of the 19th century, and today for the most part in a state of neglect. Continuing a few meters from the border with Slovenia is instead Muggia, the southernmost municipality of the region that extends on the homonymous promontory. The area overlooks the sea and the walk is not only very suggestive but it is also a way to take advantage and take a swim; in fact there are many ladders that lead directly into the water from the seafront. The historic center of the town is very picturesque and almost looks like a small Venice, not only for the architecture and the layout of the streets but also for the dock that is the protagonist of the center. The journey ends at the Miramare Castle, in Trieste, built between 1856 and 1860 at the behest of Maximilian of Habsburg-Lorraine. The building is very impressive and today houses a permanent museum and some events. The visit is fascinating not only for the beauty of the castle but for its position: it is located on a promontory, surrounded by a large park and a balcony walkway that runs through it in its entirety and overlooks the sea. The rooms are opulent and decorated in a Baroque style.
