Capistrano the village in the hills

Capistrano is a small town nestled in the hills of Monte Coppari, its economy is mainly based on agriculture, more precisely on the production of oil. The ancient eca of the Calabrian municipality is still visible today from the rear garden of Palazzo Buongiorno, where the ruins of a convent of Brazilian monks are preserved, founded between the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century. The origins of the town date back to the time of the foundation of the convent, even if the history of the city revolves around the Buongiorno. The noble family has in fact represented both the economic power and the cultural and political matrix for the country. The carrara marble cenotaph kept inside the mother church depicts Don Pietro Buongiorno, lord of Capistrano in the second half of the nineteenth century. Built in the seventeenth century the cathedral of San Nicola Vescovo, has undergone many restorations due to earthquakes, has a bronze door made in 1995 by Farina. Inside there is the fresco depicting the baptism of Jesus, attributed to Renoir, who on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy obtained the attribution of Italian wonder. Set in the ceiling is the painting of the Madonna di Pozzi, which cult dates back to very ancient centuries. The profound religiosity of the inhabitants of the place is also expressed through the historical re-enactment of the Saints. Neither example is the feast of San Filippo and Sant'Elena in which the hamlet of Nicastrello is used as a festive setting. The Mariano Lo Moro exhibition set up in the ancient Palazzo dei Bongiorno in the library room shows steps from everyday life that took place in the town. Capistrano enjoys an immense woodland heritage, known above all for the presence of numerous equipped areas and springs of low mineral content waters.
