Avellino, a city of a thousand monuments

Avellino is one of the classic small jewels of the Italian peninsula, too often forgotten. This city can boast a history of more than a thousand years: one of the oldest buildings in the city, the castle, has its own original nucleus dating back to the Lombard period. The symbol of the city is the Clock Tower, a 36 meters high structure located in Piazza Amendola. Another place of interest is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Modestino, intriguing for the mix of styles: welcomed by its neoclassical facade, it is then incorporated into a building with baroque interiors and naves, to conclude with Romanesque crypts. The Palazzo della Cultura instead houses the Irpino Archaeological Museum, the Network Center, the Provincial Library and the Children's Library. Walking along one of the main arteries, Corso Umberto I, you can come across the Fountain of Bellerophon and the Renaissance building called Casina del Principe. Since there are the conditions for a prolonged visit of the city, Avellino can also welcome its guests at the table with numerous typical products. Typical is the stuffed lasagna, filled with meat sauce, hard-boiled eggs, sausage, mozzarella and grated cheese. Typical products of the Avellino area are legumes, among which it is worth mentioning the “fasuli quarantini”, white beans of great consistency and flavor; the chickpeas are proposed again in the “lagane e ceci” dish, typical of the winter period.
