Atella to discover

In the heart of the Vitalba valley, on the slopes of Mount Vulture, in the province of Potenza, stands Atella; located 500 meters above sea level, it has 3900 inhabitants. Founded between 1320 and 1330 it experienced the domination of the Angevins, still today clearly visible to the visitor through the remains of an ancient tower, the only surviving element of the Angevin castle, destroyed by the 1694 earthquake. the town's cultural and religious heritage is the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria ad nives, built in the 14th century. Crossing the historic Porta Melfi, dating back to the 14th century, you go along the central Corso Papa Giovanni XXIII until you reach Piazza Matteotti, the beating heart of the town, where the Town Hall overlooks. Also noteworthy is the naturalistic aspect of Atella which can be appreciated in full just outside the historic center, where the abbey of San Michele Arcangelo stands, an oasis of rare beauty that delights the visitor with its timeless landscape wonders.
