Piobbico and the Brancaleoni castle

The village of Piobbico rises in a valley of the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, nestled between the Nerone and Montiego mountains. The town appears as a small center with a very suggestive aspect, surrounded by greenery. The morphology of the territory is defined by the steep gorges of the Candigliano river, which bathes the town together with the other watercourse, the Biscubio. We can also find numerous caves that can be visited; one of these housed the remains of an Ursus spelaeus (a bear that existed during the Pleistocene), currently visible in the civic museum. The museum exhibits both geo-paleontological collections and testimonies and objects belonging to the Brancaleoni family. It is no coincidence that this museum is located at the Brancaleoni Castle, a medieval stronghold which was later adapted as a palace in the Renaissance period. Perhaps the most beautiful room in the complex is the so-called 'Greek room', the private accommodation of Count Antonio II frescoed by Giorgio Picchi according to themes taken from Hellenic mythology. Piobbico has been home to the original Club dei Brutti since 1879, now made up of 30,000 members and with 25 locations around the world. A good time to visit the village is during the Palio della Pannocchia, in August, when numerous initiatives are planned such as the Renaissance costume parade and the Banquet at the Brancaleoni court.
