Vergato: starting from the Gothic line to create paths of memory and art

Vergato is a town in the province of Bologna in the heart of the rural beauties of the Felsinei hills. It was a stopping place for travelers with taverns and inns, and an important Roman and Etruscan center. It is also a town known for its textile craftsmanship, and the origin of the toponym 'Vergato' is linked to the particular band processing of the fabrics. The heart of the community is the Palazzo dei Capitani della Montagna, today the seat of the town hall, it is known for the stained glass windows in the council room made by Luigi Ontani and for the coats of arms on the facade of the building of the various Captains of the Mountain that have succeeded one another over time. There are also many small and large monuments linked to the fallen of the Second World War and also the paths that lead to the trenches and places of memory. Vergato has unfortunately been at the center of the conflicts of recent years which have caused not only the almost total destruction of the urban center but the loss of many human lives. Vergato was part of the 'Gothic line', for which he also received the gold medal for civil valor. Among the religious buildings we remember the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the parish church of San Pietro, located in the hamlet of Roffeno, towards the mountain area. The parish church is very old and houses a prestigious baptismal font from the Lombard period dating back to the seventh century. Also noteworthy is the hamlet of Tolè, a well-known tourist place, known for its 'street art' works and for its thirteen fountains.
