From the Latin Scupie or sentinel, the town was born around the Castle, guardian of the valley. After the battle of the Campi Palentini in 1268, the inhabitants of the villages of San Giovanni and San Lorenzo moved their homes around the promontory, forming the nucleus of Scurcola. The country later experienced fatal pages with the repression of the Lombards against pro-Bourbon brigandage. Extending from the slopes of Monte San Nicola to the Piana, the authentic village defines itself as a hospitable community for those who love mountain walks and take paths among the artistic beauties. The Castle, which was the feudal residence of the Orsini and later of the Colonna, dominates the valley with its towers and walls. Walking through the narrow streets and alleys of medieval character we will visit the stone Church of the Holy Trinity with two symmetrical stairways. The vaulted interiors are frescoed by Giustiniani at the beginning of the 1900s. The inhabitants are very attached to the statue of Santa Maria della Vittoria (wooden, XIII century), preserved in the homonymous church. Legend has it that an old woman, driven by a dream, went to the ruins of the Sanctuary where she would find the statue in a trunk. Disputed between the towns of Tagliacozzo and Scurcola, the statue was placed on the back of a mule which led it to where the church was built.
