What to see in Siena

Siena remained intact in the Middle Ages with its roofs of that 'Terra di Siena', it presents a harmonious and coherent landscape. The Basilica of San Domenico is one of the most beautiful churches in Siena. It contains the head-relic of Saint Catherine of Siena. The style is Cistercian Gothic, the façade is gabled, smooth and devoid of decorations. The interior has an Egyptian cross plan with a single wide nave covered with trusses. The church has several chapels; the Cappella delle Volte with 14th century paintings and frescoes depicting the life of Saint Catherine. The chapel of Santa Caterina contains the relic of the saint. Piazza del Campo is the main square of the city, characterized by the original shell shape, it is renowned all over the world for its architectural beauty. Surrounding the square: the Palazzo Comunale, the Torre del Mangia, the Chapel of the Piazza, Palazzo Chigi-Zondadari and others. Inside the square is Fonte Gaia, inaugurated in 1386 presents reliefs with the Madonna and Child enthroned in the center by the Virtues and the Angels. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of Catholic worship in Siena, built in the Italian Romanesque-Gothic style. The church is raised thanks to a platform of eleven steps, and is a Latin cross with three naves and a hexagonal dome. The collegiate church of Santa Maria di Provenza has a marble facade and the image of the Madonna di Provenzano is kept inside. Basilica of San Francesco located in the homonymous square was built in the thirteenth century in Romanesque style. Inside it preserves the pyx with the Sacred Particles. Typical dishes of the Sienese tradition are: Sienese cured meats and cheeses, pici with wild boar ragù, Sienese gnudi, Sienese ribollita, cut of beef, ricciarelli, Siena panforte.
