Visit Procida

Procida is the smallest island in the Gulf of Naples. Just 4.2 square kilometers in size, it rises to 27 meters and has 10,500 inhabitants. Also known as the island of Arturo, named after the protagonist of the novel by Elsa Morante and island of the postman, a masterpiece film of the same name shot here by Massimo Troisi, Procida will be the Italian capital of culture 2022, a record for such a small island. The village of Marina Grande is the main port of the island, a tourist destination of the highest level; here is the church of Santa Maria della Pietà. The highest part of the island is located on the promontory of Terramurata, at 90 meters, which can be considered the historic core of Procida; here there are several sites of interest, such as Palazzo D'Avalos, better known as a former prison, dating back to the 16th century, it has held various functions: an elegant palace, residence of the Bourbons and finally a prison until 1988. not far from the abbey of San Michele, in honor of the patron saint of the island; dating back to the 11th century, today we visit the reconstruction of the 16th century. Inside the cave of the Virgin is remarkable, obtained in one of the side chapels and the statue of San Michele inside a reliquary. Leaving the village of Terramurata, a stop at the cannons viewpoint is mandatory, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view. The seaside village of Corricella with its colorful houses leaning against each other is the postcard that made Procida famous in the world. Interesting, hidden among the houses, is Casale Vascello, from the 16th century, one of the first settlements on the island, with houses carved into the rock and enclosed in an internal courtyard to protect itself from Saracen raids. Do not miss the many beaches such as Chiaiolella.
