Aosta is the regional capital of the Aosta Valley; located at 583 meters above sea level, it has 35,000 inhabitants. The visit can only begin with the Arch of Augustus built in 25 BC. C. We continue with the interesting cloister of Saints Peter and Bear, with its sculpted capitals; the Collegiate Church with its mosaics and the splendid wooden choir and the priory with the frescoed chapel. In the external courtyard there is the lime tree of Sant 'Orso, planted by the Saint in 1530. Do not miss the early Christian church of San Lorenzo with its underground necropolis. The praetorian gate also dates back to 25 BC. C, while of the Roman theater only the large 22 meter high facade remains. Absolutely to visit the forensic cryptoporticus, a monumental construction of the 1st century BC. C. Noteworthy is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giovanni Battista with its 2 bell towers of 60 meters, the frescoed portal and the mosaics of the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The Regional Archaeological Museum is deserving. Do not miss the spectacular Fenis Castle with its double crenellated walls and numerous towers, in the internal courtyard there is the fresco of St. George killing the dragon and along the walls of the wooden balconies there are essays with proverbs and moral maxims, even the interior frescoes are interesting. The last stop is the Bard fort, made up of various fortified buildings in the 6th century and today hosting various thematic itineraries.
