Born from the opening of a fault and the consequent volcanic activity, Ustica represents one of the most important European underwater ecosystems. Visited by cold sea currents from the Strait of Gibraltar, the island is home to rare varieties of fish and crustaceans. Combining scientific activity with tourism, naturalistic events are scheduled throughout the year. In spring scientific laboratories are organized for the study of the sea and in summer fishermen will take you to know the beautiful cliffs and inlets of the island. There are numerous underwater routes that explore the seabed characterized by great fish and algal vitality. Since 2015 the abyssal station has been studied for the ecosystem, unique in the world. At Punta Calazi you can visit the lighthouse and admire the fossils of shells, which have been trapped in the lava flow for millennia. Ustica also has terrestrial itineraries that cross it in panoramic mule tracks and surrounded by cacti, prickly pears and olive groves.
