What to see in Agropoli

Agropoli is an Italian town in the province of Salerno, in Campania. The inhabited area is surmounted by the ancient historical center which still has a large part of the walls and the seventeenth-century portal; which is accessed through the characteristic climb of the 'stairs'. The door has two openings, on the right of the main door there is in fact a secondary one open at the beginning of the twentieth century. The door has 5 merlons, two supporting marble stones while the other three iron crosses indicating the year 1909 in memory of the sacred missions. Above the main door there is the coat of arms of the Duchi Delli Monti Sanfelice. Once inside the town, here are the monuments to visit: - The castle, a triangular building with three circular towers. Around the walls of the castle there is a moat visible only from a part of the castle due to agricultural work and land subsidence over the centuries. The garden square today is used as an open-air theater. -The towers; in 1564 the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo ordered the construction of a series of watchtowers. The circular tower of San Marco, the quadrangular tower of San Francesco, the tower of Trentova and that of Punta Tresino. -The furnace of 1880 that allowed the processing of many types of bricks such as rex, tiles, telescopes, etc. -The statue of San Francesco carved in white marble is placed on a tower located in the hill of San Marco -The church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli -The Mother Church of SS Pietro and Paolo of ancient origins inside there are several works of great value such as a canvas depicting Sant'Antonio and S. Bartolomeo and San Gaetano of the eighteenth century. - The Lighthouse Punta Fortino, in Venetian style from 1929, is located at the end of the historic center. In Agropli you cannot leave without visiting its beautiful 3 km long cotsa. Along the coast it is possible to see the Trentova rock, famous for being linked to the mainland by a very thin line of land that can be covered on foot.
