Monserrato: discovering inland Sardinia

Monserrato is a Sardinian town located in the heart of the Campidano plain. The church of Santa Maria de Pauli is a symbolic place of worship of the city, founded on an ancient pagan temple. It houses some valuable works and amazes the marble altar. The statue of the Madonna di Monserrato is one of the oldest works while among the most modern is the painting by the Sardinian artist Giovanni Argiolas and Augusto Loi. The Catalan Gothic church of Sant'Ambrogio is instead dedicated to the town's patron saint, who appears in an imposing statue in front of the building. Among the most modern religious buildings it is good to remember the church of SS. Redentore and the Church of San Giovanni Battista de la Salle, the latter only inaugurated in 2004. The Sardinian Railway Museum has been located in Monserrato since 1997. About a thousand square meters of exhibition space with machines, documents and tools related to railways. Visitors can also travel aboard vintage locomotives through the natural landscapes of the island. The economy of the town was in the past mainly based on the production of wine, of which today it still remains a large producer. In particular with the Sociale Monserrato winery, the largest production plant, which produces fine wines such as Nuragus, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Girò.
