Journey to Cecina and nearby villages

Cecina is located along the Tuscan coast, and is often thought to have no peculiarities. In fact, this town is known above all for seaside tourism: but, in reality, it hides many little-known and very interesting aspects that go well beyond the beaches. The city is very ancient: archaeological finds suggest that it even dates back to settlements from the Stone Age. Later it was inhabited by Etruscans and Romans, and its name comes from a Roman consul, Albino Cecina. Today it is possible to admire the remains of his villa. From a naturalistic point of view, one cannot fail to mention the pines planted at the behest of the Grand Duke Leopoldo of Tuscany in the nineteenth century. Today Cecina can boast 15 kilometers of Mediterranean scrub, which form a splendid backdrop to the white beaches. The reason for such candor lies in the existence of a Solvay plant for the processing of calcium carbonate, which discharged the processing residues into the sea. Two centers of great interest, not far from Cecina, are Vada and Castiglioncello.
