Trieste

Trieste the chief town of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region; it has represented for centuries a bridge between central and southern Europe, mixing southern, central European and Slavic characters and is the most populous municipality in the region. The history of the city is very ancient, these lands have been inhabited since the first millennium BC. C; with the Romans the ancient city became one of the most important ports of the Adriatic. On the top of Colle San Giusto is the archaeological site of Trieste where there are the remains of a basilica, typical buildings of the acropolis and a complex of temples, dedicated to Zeus, Juno and Minerva. On these ancient ruins an ancient Paliocristiana basilica was built in the 5th century in the place where today it is possible to admire the church of San Giusto, decorated with fragments of the Roman period. The Castelliere is the work of a conspicuous reconstruction and renovation that took place between the 16th and 17th centuries, starting from the first stronghold, the Casa del Capitano, the project extended to the construction of the parade ground and the Trieste lapidary which collects over 130 Roman finds . The monuments of the city are linked to the ancient Habsburg government to which the urban layout is due. The Palazzo Revoltella, now the seat of the civic museum, the palace was inhabited by the owner Pasquale Revoltella who on his death donated the palace and its contents to the municipality of Trieste. Overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, the Miramare Castle is a historic building surrounded by a large park, it was built as the home of Maximilian of Habsburg-Lorraine and his wife Charlotte of Belgium between 1856 and 1860. Today the castle is used as a museum and inside it preserves the original furnishings including ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The hall of enchantments, former fish market, is the work of the architect Polli who mixed the need to build a building that respected the aesthetic canons of the city and the tradition of the market. Today it houses the modern art exhibition center. The port was the nerve center of the city, the hydrodynamic power plant is one of the oldest buildings in the port, today an art incubator. The power plant is divided into 3 parts: the former conversion station, the boilers with the engine room and the two water storage towers. This pulsating machine was the driving force behind port activity. The transformation process of this area starts from the ministry for cultural heritage and activities that want to make the site a cultural propulsion.
