The Castle of Agliè

The ducal castle of Agliè is an imposing building located in the municipality of Agliè. Construction began in the 12th century on behalf of the San Martino family. Since 1939 the castle has been used as a museum and is part of the UNESCO site. The transformation of the castle was commissioned to the architect Amedeo di Castellamonte who modified the facade overlooking the garden, the complex of the chapel of San Massimo and the two galleries. It became the property of the Savoy family in 1764 and the castle underwent further modifications; large apartments were built and a church outside. The castle became famous thanks to the television series Elisa di Rivombrosa who used the building and gardens for filming. The Castle consists of 20 rooms and other buildings. The most important rooms are: - The hall of columns which today houses the ticket office is located at the entrance to the castle. -The hunting room, attributed to Birago, is made up of stuccoes depicting hunting scenes and trophies; it also contains two canvases by the painter Berger. -The Tuscan room contains finds from the territory of the ancient city of Tusculum -Gallerie delle tribune, with the paintings of the knights of the Order of the Annunciation and their 72 portraits. Each room of the castle still contains the furniture and objects of the era that allow visitors to know and dream of those past eras. Attached to the castle is the park, which surrounds the entire area. The garden layout is typical of 1839 with Italian and English gardens organized in terraces on three floors. At the entrance there is a fountain that symbolizes the Dora Baltea that flows into the Po. Also around the castle there are seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings.
