An Italian town in the province of Macerata, Matelica is located in the Esino river valley, surrounded by two mountain ranges. The proximity to Rome and the strong influence of the Vatican have contributed to the birth of a large religious architectural heritage, most of which are located along the main route of the city center. Matelica is important for being the birthplace of Enrico Mattei, to whom the most important square in the municipality is dedicated. Adjacent to the square is the town hall, which houses the municipal art gallery: its exhibition mainly includes nineteenth-century works, in particular portraits and pencil studies. Among the most important attractions to visit we find: the “Giuseppe Piermarini” Theater and the underlying Roman baths, the Civic Archaeological Museum, the Church of San Francesco, the Civic Tower, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Matelica is also known as the city of honey and wine: in fact, the famous “Verdicchio” is produced here.
