What to see in San Salvo

San Salvo is a town in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, located near the Adriatic coast. The name of the city derives from the ancient abbey located near the Trigno, around which the town of the historic center developed. The historic center developed around the fourteenth-fifteenth century, unfortunately due to modern buildings some of the structures of the past were demolished such as the Porta da Terra, the only element left in memory of the walls that surrounded the historic center, called 'Quadrilatero' . The Porte da Terra were rebuilt in a modern key in 1997 but were not as successful as those of the past. The church of San Giuseppe rises above the ancient abbey of Trigno, of which a wall and part of the crypt remain. The church is in Baroque style with barrel vaults and pilasters; inside is the canvas of the Holy Family and the painting of St. Joseph fleeing from Egypt. The church of the Madonna delle Grazie stands on an ancient chapel founded by the friar Salvatore to favor the activity of the Compagnia degli Scalzi. The nineteenth-century style church has a single nave with an Art Nouveau vault and several statues of the twentieth century. Inside the Villa Comunale there are several works made in a modern key by contemporary artists, in the center of the villa there is also a modern theater that has never been used. The Aldo Moro Cultural Center contains all the meeting places for young people such as the cinema. The most important fraction of San Salvo is San Salvo Marina, a seaside tourist center that holds the Blue Flag of the FEE; its promenade is characterized by long sandy beaches and shallow waters.
