The ancient city of Brentino Belluno

Located at the foot of Monte Baldo and Vallagarina, Brentino Belluno is a town in the province of Verona which takes its name from two of its fractions Brentino and Belluno Veronese, the municipal seat is located in a third district of Rivalta. The municipality was unified in 1930. The territory was inhabited since prehistoric times as a passage between the Valpadana and Germany, the reason is explained by the need to skip the Ceraino lock. During the Roman era the road was used as a real modern highway with a motorway exit with rest stops; in fact in 1968 during the construction of the Verona-Brenner motorway some masonry pebbles and the remains of a mansio were found. Preabocco is the smallest fraction of the municipality and has a grouped inhabited center, the houses are divided into narrow and articulated alleys; of particular importance is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria delle Grazie from the 13th century; the bare façade has a gabled style. The interior of the church has a single nave, in a chapel on the left there is a fresco depicting the Madonna enthroned with Saints Rocco and Virgilio, the Veronese triptych of the twelfth century is of considerable importance. The fresco on the entrance arch was made in the contemporary age. With the Napoleonic rule, the space around the church was deprived of the cemetery area. The Cristo di Preabacco which rises near the highway is a legacy of an Austrian noblewoman; a church dedicated to the Christ of the Road which is visible from the motorway has recently been annexed to the Crucifix. The town of Brentino is the oldest here along the streets fountains and wash houses have been built. In this town there is the staircase leading to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona.
