Ascoli Piceno is a provincial capital of the Marche region, rises 154 meters above sea level and has 52,000 inhabitants. Deeply changed from an urbanistic point of view following the unification of Italy, to meet the new needs of the city, Ascoli is grouped around the two fulcrum squares: Piazza Roma, the beating heart of the city and Piazza del Popolo, beautiful, monumental, surrounded by palaces and arcades; natural set, it was the scene of many films that told the reality and life of the Italian province. Of Romanesque-medieval conception, it is characterized by the warm color of the travertine. A very green city, full of vegetable gardens and gardens until the early 1900s, it gradually gave way to the gray of concrete and industrial plants. Between 1870 and 1930 it counts as many as 50 bacological establishments, the first of which was created by Giovanni Tranquilli. The sector then went into crisis around 1930 due to the explosion of synthetic fibers. Artistically valuable is the Sanctuary of San Serafino da San Granario with interesting early 20th century paintings among the most important examples of sacred art from the Marche region.
