useful information
Orbetello is a town in the province of Grosseto which is connected to the municipality of Monte Argentario by a road built on an artificial embankment that divides the lagoon in which it stands. In ancient times it was connected to the city of Porto Santo Stefano by a railway of which today only the old station remains. The town is separated from the sea by the Tombolo della Giannella to the north and the Tombolo Feniglia to the south. The historic center is accessed by crossing the Porta Medina Coeli which takes its name from the duke who had it built. Other ancient gates in the town are the Porta del Soccorso and the Porta a Terra. From the walls of Orbetello you can admire the lagoon and the historic center. Not far from here is the Polveriera Guzman where Garibaldi supplied himself with weapons and ammunition for the Expedition of the Thousand. The historic city center is characterized by stone buildings, well-kept houses and picturesque streets. Its heart is Corso Italia where there are many shops, restaurants and bars as well as the market. In Piazza della Repubblica is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its magnificent rose window and travertine facade. The symbol of the city, however, is the Spanish Mill which can be easily reached via a cycle path that allows you to admire the surrounding landscape.
