Fontanarosa is a town of 3400 inhabitants in the province of Avellino. It stands on a hill at an altitude of 500 meters above the sea and characterized by very elegant buildings built in local stone. Of great interest is the Church of San Nicola Maggiore with its Renaissance style and its fine naves. Inside there is a bust of San Nicola dating back to the 17th century and two paintings from the 18th century. The Straw Cart, an imposing obelisk that is carried in procession every 14th August on the occasion of the patronal feast, deserve to be seen. Also noteworthy is the Civic Tower with its bell tower and bulbous dome covered with colored ceramic. At its foot lies the Calvary with its wonderful frescoes. An obligatory stop for tourists is the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Misericordia with its valuable works of art. One of these is the triptych of gilded gold as well as equally beautiful are the frescoes that adorn the ceilings of the structure.
