Isola del Liri, a surprising surprise

Isola del Liri is a town of 11,000 inhabitants, at an altitude of 217 meters, in the province of Frosinone, in Lazio. Its undisputed symbol is certainly the waterfall that the Liri river forms in the center of the town, of enormous flow and with a drop of 27 meters it is unique in the world. Located halfway between Naples and Rome, this position facilitates tourism due to its ease of reaching. Being part of the lower Ciociaria, its soul is industrial thanks to the French who made it a headquarters for paper mills in the nineteenth century. The paper industry, however, entered into crisis at the end of the 1900s and the city put in place a massive work of redevelopment and conversion of abandoned sites, now home to municipal offices, auditoriums, libraries, museums, places therefore returned to citizenship. Noteworthy is the river park embellished with sculptures built with industrial pieces from disused factories. The maximum splendor of the city coincides with the period 1600-1700 when it belonged to the Duchy of Sora. Monuments to visit are the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi castle of the fifteenth century, on a pre-existing fortress, with a mighty tower and the famous hall of the 18 villages, in whose wooden coffered ceiling the possessions of the duchy are represented. The Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo is also worth a visit. Here was born the scholar, researcher Giustiniano Nicolucci, ethnologist, anthropologist, archaeologist of international fame.
