History and authenticity in Umbria

In the central Apennines there is an almost picturesque town, named after Gualdo Tadino, one of the wonders of Umbria. The village, in the province of Perugia, has a modest number of inhabitants (about 1000), but a combination of history and attractions capable of astounding tourists. The town is known above all for its ceramics, a symbol of a centuries-old and intriguing past, worth knowing. However, Gualdo Tadino is characterized by much more. Rocca Flea is the ancient defensive architectural symbol of the city, which has ruled the Umbrian town from above since the Middle Ages. The light-colored fortress was rebuilt by Frederick II in the mid-13th century and restored by Biordo Michelotti in the 14th century. Having become the luxurious residence of the envoy cardinal in the 16th century, it is today the Municipal Art Gallery and Museum of Ceramics. Another important medieval heritage can be admired in Piazza Martiri della Libertà, the central square of the historic center of Gualdo, where we find the municipal tower of the thirteenth century and the Palazzo del Podestà rebuilt in the eighteenth century (after a terrible earthquake) as Palazzo delle Arti. The Basilica of San Benedetto and the Church of San Francesco are two other must-see destinations for lovers of medieval architecture. In general, those who love history and tradition could add this village to the notebook of possible destinations and itineraries. Surely Gualdo Tadino can only offer so much prestige and unique emotions.
