Sestino is located in Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo and has 1240 inhabitants. The town was frequented by shepherds, hunters, farmers who belonged to various peoples (Etruscans, Piceni, Umbrians, Galli Senoni) in fact there have been findings of spikes and arrows and the remains of huts. In the first century a. C. the Romans began the construction of a large city, in this crossroads of the Apennines, where roads converged for the Marche, Tuscany and Romagna. In the Middle Ages it passed under the diocese of Città di Castello which included part of the Metauro, Foglia and Marecchia valleys. Sestino belonged to the Malatesta of Rimini and then to Florence at the behest of Pope Leo X. In 1566 Cosimo I de 'Medici began to build a fortress city on the Sasso di Simone to defend the borders of the Grand Duchy against the expansion of the Dukes of Urbino. Until 1779 the parish church of San Pancrazio di Sestino had its own autonomy and the archpriest exercised an episcopal jurisdiction over the local churches; in 1779 the archpriesthood nullius dioecesis of Sestino was suppressed and aggregated to the diocese of Sansepolcro.
