Know Messina

Messina is a Sicilian town, the capital and has 2,24833 inhabitants. It can be defined as the gateway to Sicily due to its strait that separates Sicily from Calabria. It was destroyed and then rebuilt several times. In Messina, in the port area, there is the statue of the Madonnina that they say watches over the sailors. It is the city of the sea, of fountains and statues, like that of Neptune which they say watches over the strait from the mainland. In Piazza Duomo, in the bell tower of the Cathedral we can admire the largest and most complex astronomical clock in the world. Not far from Piazza Duomo we find the Orione fountain, the most beautiful fountain of the European 500. In via San Giacomo we find the Calapaj d'Alcontres palace, the oldest in the city. Piazza Cairoli is instead located in the shopping street and is always a very crowded and busy square. Piazza Unione Europea instead hosts the neoclassical Zanca building where the town hall is located. The sanctuary of Christ the King can be reached by passing through the Vittorio Emanuele II gallery and is the symbol of the many citizens who died in war as well as the emblem of Messina hit several times by natural disasters.
