Gaeta, marvel on the sea

Gaeta is a pearl on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Located in the province of Latina, it offers the beauty of seven beaches; there are numerous bathing establishments that allow you to fully enjoy the crystal clear water and the Mediterranean climate. The first settlements in the Gulf of Gaeta date back to the 10th century BC. C, then the region passed under the control of the Aurunci first and then the Romans. Medieval history is rich and lively, with the city first disputed between Frederick II of Swabia and the papacy, and then passed into Angevin and Aragonese hands. This past is reflected in the streets of Gaeta Vecchia, the historic center that still maintains the memories of the past in the colors and scents. Also in the upper part of the city we find the Angevin-Aragonese Castle; the complex overlooks the sea, giving an impression of ancient might. Another military place of interest is the Gran Guardia, the ancient seat of the city garrison. Near the port is the cathedral dedicated to Saints Erasmus and Marciano and Maria Assunta in Cielo. The imposing Gothic facade welcomes the tourist who will certainly be struck by the Baroque and Neoclassical interiors. The cathedral is mentioned because the complete list of churches would be endless, comprising more than fifty elements. Churches still in use, deconsecrated, incorporated into other buildings: these structures are striking for their variety and beauty, ranging from Gothic, Neo-Gothic, Romanesque, Neoclassical, Baroque and Rococo styles. Typical of Gaeta are native olives (very tasty, especially in brine) and chicory. Among the local specialties we find the 'caniscione', a stuffed crescent that can be placed next to panzerotto. The queen of the kitchen, however, is the tiella, a product halfway between a stuffed pizza and a savory pie; the most common fillings include octopus, anchovies, escarole and cod. It is usually eaten cold, ideal for a nice seafood lunch.
