Viterbo: the heart of Tuscia

Viterbo is a Lazio town of 65 350 inhabitants, the capital of Tuscia. It has ancient origins (it is believed that Viterbo derives from the Latin 'Vetus Urbs', meaning Old Town) and has the largest medieval historic center in Europe, surrounded by walls. Viterbo is also known as the City of the Popes, in fact in the thirteenth century it was the papal seat. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The heart of the city is the San Pellegrino district, the largest medieval district in Europe, built in the 12th century; Piazza del Plebiscito is also interesting, where the Town Hall and the Prefecture are located. In Piazza San Lorenzo we can find the Cathedral, of Romanesque origin and the Papal Palace; inside we can find the famous Conclave Hall. The Loggia delle Benedizioni with its 7 arches is very beautiful. Unmissable stops are the Civic Museum and the National Etruscan Museum. A few kilometers from the historic center we have the opportunity to find the Archaeological Site of Ferento, where you can find the splendid Roman Theater, where numerous events and shows are still held.
