In the heart of Formia, between sea and mountains

Formia is a municipality located in the province of Latina, in Lazio. The town was born as a common union of two villages, namely Castellone which is the highest part of the city, the medieval one and where the historic center resides, with its octagonal tower, and Mola, the marine area built around its Tower. Formia is known for having been identified as the city of sorcerers sung by Homer in the odyssey, and let's not forget that it was the seat of illustrious personalities such as Cicero and Maecenas. Among the first attractions that are shown to us at the beginning of the video is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the 1500s. Later we can admire the village of Mola, with its splendid Angevin tower, commissioned by Carlo D'Angiò, King of Naples. Among the most beautiful squares of the place there is Piazza della Vittoria where there are the remains of an ancient temple of Venus. The heart of Formia can be found in Piazza Marconi where the imposing Town Hall stands out, today the seat of the National Archaeological Museum. We then move to the upper part, in the Castellone area where we can admire the historic center with its typically medieval features, and what remains of the castle, the Torre di Castellone. Formia has two souls, the sea area and the mountain area, harmoniously connected by the twelve towers that were part of the historic center, of which only two remain today, including the Clock Tower, so named for the presence of an eighteenth-century majolica clock. .
