Located in Val Rendena, Massimeno is the smallest town in Trentino Alto Adige, with its 125 inhabitants. It rises on the edge of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, with a typical Dolomite landscape, surrounded by high mountains and bathed by the Sarca river which flows along the valley floor. Massimeno rises at 861 meters above sea level which guarantees a spectacular view over the entire valley. Since the Middle Ages the territory enjoyed a certain autonomy from the bishopric of Trento which dominated the rest of the region. Around the central square it preserves numerous masonry buildings decorated with wooden superstructures and frescoes which constitute its most characteristic elements. In the center you can also admire stone wash houses. The most important monument is the church of San Giovanni Battista which preserves a cycle of frescoes by Simone and Filippo Baschenis from 1534. The area is suitable for naturalistic excursions and trekking. Today the main resource of the territory is made up of tourism which for centuries lived on breeding and dairy production. The typical job was instead that of grinder with the typical round pedal wheels.
