Joppolo is a small village in the province of Vibo Valentia. In 865 d. C. in the hamlet of Caroniti was born the famous San Gennaro patron of the city of Naples. The town offers the visitor many opportunities for recreation, ranging from the natural beauty of the sea and the surrounding hills to the splendid historical and religious buildings. Among these deserves a mention the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmelo dated 1894 and located on top of Monte Poro. According to legend, a shepherd had an apparition of the Madonna who asked him to build this place of worship. The man accepted the job and, helped by the local authorities, he succeeded in this undertaking. Every 16th July the patronal feast of the Madonna del Carmelo takes place in which the statue of the virgin is carried in procession around the sanctuary. Another church that deserves to be visited is that of San Sisto dating back to the nineteenth century. Projects have been implemented in the country to provide jobs for the unemployed and contributions to combat poverty.
