The ancient castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano in Maiori

Above the town of Maiori, reachable through many steps, there is an ancient castle, the castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano. Today the impressive building is privately owned, but the current owner lets people in and personally takes a very picturesque guided tour. The castle was a real fortress, a fortification inside which all the citizens of Maiori (which was part of the Amalfi league) took refuge in case of invaders from the sea. Even today you can admire the 9 semicircular towers, still almost intact. Between the eighth and the ninth there is a shorter distance, a sign that there was the entrance door. The walls stretch for 550 meters. Inside the structure there are many objects from every era, both of common and daily use and of war use. There are even the remains of a Roman house, albeit partially collapsed. Maiori's coat of arms shows a seahorse, a sign of its link with the sea, and a wheel, a sign of the presence of the mills.
