Cervia, salt and tourism

Cervia is a town of about 28,500 inhabitants in the province of Ravenna, overlooking the Adriatic coast 24 km southeast of the capital. Its very ancient origins can be traced back to the Bronze Age, but it is in the Etruscan period that the production of salt began, one of the activities that in history have made the fortune of the village, giving a subsequent impulse to the thermal activity with the discovery of the healing properties of water and six salt marshes. Always with a vocation aimed at fishing and seafaring, Cervia has drawn from its bond with the sea the inspiration to give itself an organization as a tourist port, creating in a short time a very modern Porto Canale and making use of cutting-edge skills for the storage of pleasure boats. Taking a tour in the center, one cannot fail to visit the Torre di San Michele dating back to the end of the 17th century, placed in defense of the nearby Porto Canale and the Magazzino del Sale dating back to the same period. Not far away, passing through a city gate, you reach Piazzetta Pisacane, dotted with trees and home to open-air markets. Another door leads to Piazza Garibaldi, the beating heart of the city where, in addition to clubs, shops and bars, there is the Palazzo Comunale, and in front of it the seventeenth-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in neoclassical style and with an unfinished front , with exposed stone. The square is crossed by Corso Mazzini, also a reference point for shopping and nightlife.
