Canale d'Agordo, the town of Pope Luciani

Canale d'Agordo is a small town in the province of Belluno, nestled in the Dolomites, in the Biois Valley; it rises to 976 meters of altitude and has 1115 inhabitants. He is universally known for being the birthplace of Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I. Here everything speaks of him, his presence is breathed in every corner, a foundation-museum has been named after him; unfortunately his birthplace cannot be visited but can only be admired from the outside. The town has a clear tourist vocation, offering a varied range of possibilities: an important tourist area, many naturalistic activities and accommodation facilities suitable for all ages. The town boasts a lot of history, having always been the nerve center of the valley both culturally and religiously. Witness the valuable historic center, full of interesting buildings with external frescoes dating back to 1700, especially of Saints and Madonnas. In the center you can also see the characteristic barns, called tabià. The most important building is the house of rules, a richly frescoed historic building from 1640. Do not miss a nature walk in the Gares Valley, one of the most enchanting valleys in the area, of glacial origin, also offers a delightful alpine lake. Noteworthy is the parish church of the town, which has been awarded the title of Parish for 600 years; here Pope Luciani celebrated mass.
