culture useful information
On the border between the province of Cosenza and that of Crotone, of which it is not a part, Castelsilano dominates the valley of the Neto river from above. Its history is quite recent, it became the hunting lodge of Prince Rota of Cerenzia. In July 1980, a Libyan Air Force MiG-23, known today as the Ustica massacre, fell near the town. In the heart of the historic center near the birthplace of Mother Eufrasia Iaconis, founder of the daughters of the Immaculate Conception of Buenos Aires, stands the mother church dedicated to Mary Immaculate, which became a parish in 1715. The war memorial, inaugurated in 1927 at the presence of the then Minister of Public Works Michele Bianchi, built by the sculptor Filippo Cifarello, stands on the main square. The economy of Castelsilano is mainly based on agriculture, especially for the collection and trade of chestnuts. Local craftsmanship is based on the making of tapestries and blankets, and for the construction of carved furniture.
