The historic center of the town was called La Terra, a name that honors the hardworking and peasant tradition of its people. For a long time inhabited by the Greeks, the griko-Salento or Hellenophone dialect is still spoken among the elderly who remember it. The structure of the city heart recalls the Byzantine chora with the characteristic medieval layout. The circular shape, followed by the arrangement of the houses, confirms the pre-existence of a wall, which was turreted, of which two of the seven towers are still visible. The peasant tradition and culture is deepened at Casa a corte, a small museum that exhibits the ancient local customs and traditions. Walking along Via Roma, the main historical street, you get lost in the labyrinth of alleys that line buildings with refined wall decorations, balconies embroidered with stone sculptures, coats of arms of ancient families, corner columns and artistic portal. Since 2017 the town has been called the City of Aloe, a plant grown and transformed into numerous farms outside the city.
