The nature reserve of Torre Guaceto covers an area of 114 hectares of which 864 hectares (77%) affected by agricultural crops. The olive groves occupy much of the territory (264 hectares). in it. Monumental trunks, twisted and cables, nest tit, the long-eared owl, the hoopoe, magpies and many other migratory birds, to spend the winter season. There is no lack foxes, hedgehogs, moles and mice and wild reptiles like geckos, hummingbirds and lizards. At the edge of the olive groves, the stone walls, survives the spontaneous shrubs that over time has given way to agriculture. Here we can find species typical of the " Mediterranean" some of which are protected under the Habitats Directive (92/43 / EEC). The olive groves are threatened by intensive farming practices, from abandonment to the reduced profit margins and depopulation of rural areas. The removal and trade of monumental olive trees for ornamental purposes, prohibited by law, are continuing unabated, impoverishing a unique landscape. In order to enhance the area it was mapped out a walkway that cuts through the area of the olive groves in the nature reserve of Torre Guaceto and connects the visitor center to " Gausit" Serranova with the Service Area and the beach of Punta Penna Grossa. The route follows part of an ancient path: the so-called " Track Prince" and touches on the most representative of the area allowing a vision of interventions through the project " LIFE + Cent. Oils. Med. ", Large-scale project for the recovery of biodiversity.
