Baroque Lecce, defined as the Florence of the South, can be reached in 15 mins and the well-known Gallipoli in 30 mins. The Province of Lecce is rich in so many vibrant towns and villages, with picturesque buildings in the so-called pietra leccese, the local typical stone, and numerous churches in baroque style. In summer many festivals and patronal feasts take place every night, where typical home-made food can be tasted and ancient traditions and music come to life again. Some festivals, such as Notte della Taranta and Premio Barocco, attract tens of thousands of people every year and have international relevance. The coasts of Salento are washed by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, its sun-kissed territory is characterized by centuries-old olive trees surrounding ancient farms, the so-called masserie. Salento is the right place for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. It has been awarded the preferred place where Italians love spending their holidays. Every year the coasts of Salento are awarded honours. In 2015 Salento has been designated as the preferred place where Italians love spending their holidays, thanks to its sea, the baroque style, the local wine, food and olive oil, the hospitality and warmth of its inhabitants, and its rich ancient traditions. Every year since years the coasts of Salento have been awarded several Bandiere Blu, a challenging award given by the Italian Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to the most beautiful and with minor ecological footprint coasts. Moreover, Legambiente e Touring Club Italiano have recognized the maximum number of sails (5 sails) to Otranto, the shores near Melendugno and Nardò, where good tourism and environmental quality coexist, giving a high level offer.
