the Salento
The predominant landscape of Salento is quite variable Mediterranean from place to place depending on the soil type. Within the territory where the rock is generally friable soil is very deep mastered native forests of oak (which gave its name to the capital: Lecce), eucalyptus, olive trees, vineyards and oak trees. In the low hills and near the coast where the rocks rise from the ground are herbs (sage, mint, rosemary, bay, thyme), prickly pear and agave that are well...
suited to its calcareous nature. The rural landscape of Salento reflects the culture of man who lives there. The campaign Salento is covered with a myriad of olive trees and vineyards extensions that lord it over the landscape reflecting the richness of their product. To complete the landscape there are dozens of watchtowers dotted along the coast, we will see the works of man who over the years has served the territory stony at its disposal to create: tombs: (Dolmen and menhirs), rural buildings such as trulli, the pajare, specche, and the fantastic monuments in Baroque art made with the local stone. Salento the climate that has characterized the flora and fauna of the place, of 'rocky environment and vegetation that follows, of the groundwater and karst underground. Domestic territory
To complete the discussion on the characters of the Salento, it should be remembered first of all the aspect of the karst area. Thus lack superficial rivers; existing waterways are underground, however, easily recoverable, for the purpose of irrigation, with the drilling of several wells. Therefore, olive groves and green vineyards cover large irrigated areas; Added to these are plantations of figs and vegetables, which grow thanks to these wells. But in particular in the Land of Otranto province we find the geological phenomenon of the rocky sediment: a false floor furrowed by the Murge, the median height above sea level. The latter are formed by clusters stony, limestone debris, boulders, which then materialize numerous and large caves, chasms, crevices. Here are easily found type gap fossils, including calcined shells, while lower plain these marine shells - bivalves or univalve - abound preserving the bright colors of their original appearance. Elsewhere in Salento, but always in low-lying areas, there is the equally shelly tufa, as well as a tender calcareous marl which suggests a marine sediment formed by ancient times: therefore heap of cretosi layers with " detritus" zoofite of shells, sand and various materials. Among other curiosities: in these marls have discovered fossilized teeth of sharks - the local people called them " Thunder languages" and shells that would make the joy of malacologists, collectors, mainly of the genus Cardium aculeatum and Pecten. A panoramic look inside hill of Salento: the relief is represented south from Serre, or Murge Salentine - maximum height of about 200 meters above sea level among these the best known is the Serra dei Cianci. To the north, near the Ionian coast, the hills make up the so-called Murge of Taranto. Of these territorial areas they have made reclamation works, which also allowed a partial reforestation of land previously barren or muddy. Not only from the geological point of view the Salento stands out from the rest of Puglia, but also from the language, the dialect with its own characteristics, as compared to that of Puglia. Salento in fact had been occupied by Messapi, of unspecified origin, who arrived in Italy about a thousand years. C.
Their language remains a key substrate in the local vernacular education, on which the same Greek language of later settlers could affect superficially, while greatly establishing itself in some areas, which still retain the greek dialect. Main centers of Salento where they speak a dialect derived from the descendants of the historic Magna Grecia are: Calimera (in greek " Good morning" ), Martano, Sternatia, Castrignano, Corigliano, Martignano, Zollino and Soleto. It should also be mentioned that a document of the ancient Messapian language remain a couple of hundreds of inscriptions, maybe not all genuine, that have been posted by the Mommsen and others writers. The inscriptions date back almost all of the second and first centuries a. C. and prove the origin of the Indo messapico, so that people, with contamination of Illyrian voices, Venetian and German. Translated, with an approximate certainty of their meanings, are also a few words; eg. Penkaheh " five, aran" farmland. " The Greek Salento

Calimera
Information About the City of Calimera
Calimera is a town of 7,297 inhabitants in the province of Lecce. It is the second most populous of the Greek Salento, which currently chairs the consortium. Etymology
Some argue that the name derives from the greek Καλημ Calimera? ρα (Kalimera), which means good day or, according to some scholars, beautiful district. More likely, though, the name seems to derive from the root kal, sometimes transformed into a gal. In this sense the word is due to inhabited places, fenced or otherwise used for human housing, animals or other property. By extension the term also relates to ravine, sheltered place, on Galugnano model and Gallipoli, Alliste (originally Calliste), etc. History
The origins of the village, which is located along the Via Traiana Calabra, the ancient road that connected Otranto to Lecce and Brindisi, remain uncertain. As with other ellenofoni centers of Salento, the historical debate, emphasizing the analysis of grika language, it links its birth to an alleged Byzantine colonization or older Great Greek roots. Today the active center in the service sector, known for its cultural activities, Calimera was previously forced to marginal agricultural activities, for the poverty of his fiefdom. Its population was in fact known for coal production activity coming from the use of large wood timber. The " craunàri" charcoal burning coal and street vendors and had a patron saint of their own: S. Biagio. And among the still rooted cults among calimeresi still stand today for those saints of eastern origin: S. Eligio, protector of farriers, St. Elijah, the ancient patron saint of Calimera, St. Vitus, the patron saint of animals and S. Biagio, patron of charcoal and throat. Today has been very little of the old village, but Calimera stands in ellenofona for the intense cultural activities taking place at the restoration and enhancement of grikítà. Tangible symbol of 'éllenicità' Calimera, the beautiful Attic stele donated by the Municipality of Athens at the center of Salento in 1960.Distinguished Characters
Among its illustrious men Calimera especially remembers Vito Domenico Palumbo, Hellenistic and man of letters, and his brother Michael, macchiaiolo, student of Giovanni Fattori; Giuseppe Gabrieli, orientalist and the Accademia dei Lincei; Francis Pantaleo Gabrieli, President of the Court of Cassation and then the Constitutional Judge; Horace Monti
